reached the twin engine jets, smoke was pouring from the fuselage. comedian kevin nealon was there tweeting. horrible plane crash here at aspen airport. exploded into flames as it was landing. i think it was a private jet. singer leann rimes was also at the scene. so sad. horrible plane crash we just saw happen at the aspen airport. the 1994 canada air jet originated its flight in mexico but stopped first in tucson before heading to aspen. its flight path showed the pilot circled the airport at least once, calling into traffic control. >> missed approach. november 1-1-5 whiskey fox. 33 knots tail wind. >> reporter: it was snowing. wind gusts topping 30 miles an hour. >> okay to return back and do another approach. we've had a tail wind of 30 knots. >> reporter: the plane circled back but something went wrong. >> it was coming in from the side, fully engulfed. i was just like, wow. you couldn't even tell it was a plane. >> reporter: early reports indicate there was no mayday call. >> proceed to the downed aircraft. >> getting aligned with the runway which you can normally do from qu

atlanta than it is in parts of maine tonight. we have it all covered, and we begin with nbc's kevin tibbles in minneapolis. temperatures 15 below, windchill, minus 39. kevin, good evening. >> reporter: brian, this is the coldest weather many parts of this country have seen in 20 years. and even though the hearty folks here in the twin cities are used to sub zero temperatures, this could be a cold snap for the weather books. it is a brutal, biting and dangerous cold. >> stay home, don't come out. it's very, very, very cold. >> reporter: a frigid combination of arctic air and high winds brought wind chills of minus 56 degrees in places. schools in parts of 13 midwest states shut to keep students home and safe. many say they will remain closed tuesday. all this as much of the midwest digs out from under several feet of snow. chicago has had twice as much snow to date than it usually gets. here, commuter chaos, with frozen switches stopping trains in their tracks. in indiana, overnight whiteouts responsible for dozens of pileups. today a long line of traffic sat for hours, waiting for t

kevin tibbles north of chicago in highland park. kevin, good evening. >> reporter: absolutely, brian. there are parts of the midwest where the snow has been going for two days nonstop without a break. in illinois alone, there are 1300 plows and salt trucks on the roads. it's causing chaos and forecasters are saying there is more to come. up in suburban libertyville they are digging out from more than 16 inches of snow. a challenge for deliverymen. an opportunity for folks looking for work. for many, just a lot of shoveling. >> a little bit overwhelming. it's. coming in waves. little by little, you have to keep it clean. >> reporter: crews have been out clearing the highways but the roads remain treacherous. this truck fire further complicated the morning rush. a travel nightmare at o'hare airport with hundreds of flight delayed or cancelled. in indianapolis, some are finding alternate means of transportation as city crews had a tough time there too. >> we had almost four inches in four hours. that's almost an inch an hour. that will definitely create a challenge on the road. >> repor

temperatures during this icy weather snap. >> kevin corriveau is here on this dangerous weather, kevin. >> we're looking at two particular events going on. first of all, the situation in the northeast, the blizzard in the northeast, up to two feet of snow in mches. it is still on the ground, you can see the live shots coming out of new york. the problem is tomorrow morning we are going to be quite cold. saturday can the high temperatures are only going to go to 25° in new york, 20 in boston, that means no melting is going on. but big change will occur here on sunday. 40 in boston, 41 in new york. you can imagine what that means. two feet of snow is beginning to melt. the problem with that is as we go to monday temperatures flows dive again. any standing water is going to become ice. so it's going to be a very dangerous situation as we go from monday to tuesday as well. new york looks like this: 27° on saturday. look at the temperatures as we go from monday to tuesday. that is that big drop i was telling you about. that is when any standing water any snow is going to be refreezing. no

. from "washington journal" this is 35 minutes. host: kevin bogardus of "the hill" newspaper joins us now to talk about his recent piece on the top lobbying victories of 20. -- 2013. before we get into the list of winners, you make the point that they year was lobbyist playing lobbyists playing more defense -- 2013 was a year in which lobbyists were playing more defense than offense. guest: you can compare it to 2010. we didn't have once in a generation legislation coming to effect in 2013. i think congress passed about 65 bills into law. not a lot of legislation to lobby on. you had a very active executive branch, the administration doing a lot of regulatory work. lobbyists are always trying to block what the administration was trying to do. that was a big part of 2013. host: keep what they have. guest: keep congress in check, the administration. it set up some pretty interesting situations. also, there was a lot of action to restore what they once had him a when you look at the sequester -- what they once had, when you look at the sequester. that deal to restore the funding is back.

helping the homeless will most likely be at it again. al jazeera meteorologist kevin corriveau, how much snow did this storm actually bring? >> kevin, it was a very impressive dorm we saw coming through. two feet of snow in massachusetts. 12 to 24 hours ago, you can see the storm really bundled up across the northeast. the storm is out of there across the atlantic. these were the storm totals. just north of boston, 23.8 inches. boston 17.8. english town parts of pennsylvania, 19.7. it was really western mass that got the brunt of the storm. a lot of people haven't pen working, took the day off, and then skids. >> how cold is it going to get in the overnight and coming days? >> it's going to be cold. last night the wind chill were down to minus 20s, minus 30s. washington is at 23, they're not as strong as they were last night but boston still seems like minus 10 and new york minus 6. tomorrow morning this may be the coldest air mass we see coming through but a lot of temperatures still above zero. , then sunday, look at the major warm july. boston, new york at 40, and 43, this is not

and midwest will see the coldest air in decades next week. that is fueling natural gas bills. kevin kerr, trader for over 25 years, kevin, natural gas prices rose 26% last year. it was the top performing commodity, will prices continue to keep rising? >> it looks like that. we're going to see increases into the new year. obviously. with these deep developing temperatures, we're going see prices increase. >> that may be bad news for consumers, but is that good news for the economy since the united states is a net exporter of natural gas? >> as demand increases we see demand increase over supply. over all it's not good news for the consumer. >> is there something that the consumer should know about, is it clearly in the wintertime when the price also spike, or can they expect to see higher prices for natural gas because it will take a while for it to catch up. >> natural gas is used for electricity. we'll see those pricing increases over the summer, but the majority of it will be over the wintertime. >> we keep hearing about fracking in the united states. how come that has not brought

could get up to two feet of snow overnight, and tomorrow, temperatures can plunge to record lows. kevin is here now with the latest. >> john, absolutely, this is a storm we with have been watching in the making for a couple of days now. 18 hours ago, this is what it looked like. the storm was starting to make its way from the west, and 18 hours ago, this is what people were doing to get ready for the storm. getting ready there, you can see the snow in boston. and a lot of people around new england were out buying salt, and they were out buying sand, and they were out stocking up their groceries. d.o.t. was filling up their trucks for the eventual snow we are going to see coming into play here. now come back to the weather wall, what we are looking at. notice most of kentucky, is all seeing snow right now. new york city, is the visibility has come down considerably, and in some placesly show you the storm totals we are already up to 16 inches in eastern massachusets. now, one of the big problems is going to be that police saturday warning that is in effect. it's in the just long island.

deployed the national guard and put police on the streets. >> kevin corriveau has been tracking the storm and joins us with more. >> we are looking at windy conditions and the snow across much of new york. before this began, this is 18 hours ago many people were on the streets getting ready for the storm. let's look at video that came in across the region. do we have the video? we don't - there we go. people were stocking up. the reason, not just on salt and sand, but on goods for the home because there are power outages that are expected along the coastal regions, such as massachusetts, connecticut, long island and maine. they are loading the trucks with salt. there's three things they can use, salt, sodium chloride and sand, depending on the temperature of the air. salt is for the temperatures that are warmer. sodium chloride for cooler and sand. let's look at what is happening. let's put it into motion. it is getting worse as we made our way towards 11:00 pm. heavy know, especially to parts of new jersey, which was a surprise. we are getting gusty winds and strong snow up here to

advisories remained in effect through thursday. kevin is here. kevin, this storm is moving in our direction here in new york, and it could be nasty for the next day or so. >> meteorologist: it's expected to be nasty. we have the northern storm and we have the southern storm. let's breck it down. the one you were just talking about in showing the video, this is the one with all the snow pushing towards new york right now. let's go a little bit closer and what we're going to be see something more snow arriving. we think here in new york it's going to begin in midnight. it will be light and it will go through tomorrow morning. it will accumulate heavier, stronger and the winds will pick up as well. then that secondary storm will reinforce it as well. we have warnings in affect right now. blizzard warnings, the blue is winter storm. but down here towards long island, we're talking about blizzard warnings. six inches of snow or more, winds over 35 mph as well as temperatures in the 20s or below. they're expecting the wind chill to be in the minus teens or the minus single digits. we'll

. >> let's go to kevin karvo. this is rare to see these kinds of temperatures? >> it is absolutely rare. we haven't seen this in a long time. it's because we have seen one polar outbreak after another. it has been getting colder and colder with each and every one. what we are looking at right now is the northern planes. this line that you see right here is actually a cold front. so behind the cold front, high temperatures are much lower. right now, current temperatures look like this. fargo, this is the ambient temperatures, like you would get from your temperature, minus three degrees. minneapolis is minus three degrees. the windchill warnings in the area. what does that mean? first of all, windchill affects anything that is warm-blooded. it pulls away the natural layer of heat away from your body. the stronger the winds are, the more it is going to pull it away. so the -- it's going to actually make you lose that heat faster and that's why the stronger the winds are, we get those very low wind chills. let's put this in motion. feels more like 45, minus 45 in fargo, north dakota. we wi
